They set this up to give the kids a thrill during the “Tiger Cruise,” which was a chance for the kids of the sailors aboard the ship to cruise back from Pearl Harbor to Oakland.
The car they used was a ‘64 Plymouth which belonged to the detachment on the ship; it was their vehicle in the Philippines whenever they pulled into Subic Bay. They figured since the thing didn’t run anymore that they would gut it, take it home with them and launch it off the flight deck. This was the cruise they made in ‘78.
Before the tree huggers get involved, there are many more planes in the ocean. Relax.
